Job Description:The position will be with the Human Health and Performance Contract (HHPC) supporting NASA’s Human Systems Engineering Department at JSC, within the Space Food Systems Laboratory.  The Freeze-Dried Program Food Scientist will oversee freeze-dried food production at the Space Food Systems Laboratory and participate in provisioning activities related to the International Space Station flight food system. Tasks include, but are not limited to, food production planning, ensuring adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices for food production facilities, up to and including participation in facility preparation and food production activities.


Responsibilities:
  • Oversight of the freeze-dried production program at the Space Food Systems Laboratory:
    • Coordinate production activities
    • Monitor Good Manufacturing Practices from a quality assurance perspective
    • Participate in production planning
    • Review product testing results
    • Conduct root cause analysis in the event of production failures
    • Improve and optimize products and processes
    • Ensure production documentation is filed as required
    • Update food manufacturing specifications as required
  • Provide food science project support as assigned:
    • Support on-ground experiments and studies
    • Product reformulation
    • Product development
    • Sensory evaluation
    • Preparation and review of technical reports, presentations, and charts
  • Support ISS flight food provisioning activities as assigned:
    • Participation in facility preparation/food processing
    • Flight packaging
    • Container stowage
    • Weekly reporting and collection of metrics
  • Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel
  • Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies, and procedures
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company
  • Responsible for completing all assigned training

Required Education and Experience:
  • BS in Food Science, Food Engineering, or a related science or engineering field, with demonstrated experience in freeze-dried food production.  Minimum 5 years’ previous experience in a commercial food production setting.
  • ServSafe food manager certification, or demonstrated experience in food facility quality assurance
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, MS Project, PowerPoint and associated tools


Desired Education and Experience:
  • MS in Food Science, Food Engineering, or a related science or engineering field, previous experience with sensory evaluation, quality assurance, and product development.
  • Certified Research Chef certification, culinology certification
  • Risk-based HACCP certification


Pay Range:Pay Range $74,750.00 - $115,000.00 - $155,250.00

Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
