Chaucer Foods: Assistant Food Scientist

Department: Research & Development
Reports To: Food Scientist, R&D Technical Manager
Supervises: Assistant Food Scientist Intern
Position Description:
Under the direction of the Food Scientists and the R&D Technical Manager, the Assistant Food Scientist assists with the completion product development, process and product improvements, and other R&D tasks.  This position also works with other Chaucer Foods, Inc functional groups to ensure effective communication, and successful customer relations.
Responsibilities:
  • Send and receive samples as necessary
  • Ensure that laboratory and R&D files are maintained effectively
  • Complete competitive analysis for customers and internal projects
  • Evaluate the color, flavor, pH, moisture, and other qualities of food items
  • Maintain needs of current and future customers
  • Assist with the development of formulations and processes for new products, including packaging, shelf life, cost, nutritional profile, and other analysis
  • Assist with the development of applications for the use of company products, including nutritional profile, cost, and other analysis
 
Required Skills:
  • Must have a Associates Degree in Applied Science, or equivalent
  • Must have experience in the food industry, Research & Development preferred
  • Must have a working knowledge of food safety
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications
  • Must have strong technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels, using appropriate media
 
Working Conditions:
Typical working conditions include office, lab, outdoor, and production environment settings.  Employees must be able to stand for long periods of time, and frequently lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds.  Travel is estimated at 5%.
