Dr. Luyao Ma is an Assistant Professor of Intelligent Food Manufacturing Systems at Oregon State University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Food Science and Technology and the Department of Biological and Ecological Engineering.
Her research focuses on integrating artificial intelligence (AI), biology, and sensing technologies to advance sustainable food manufacturing, enhance food safety, and improve quality. Dr. Ma's current research areas include: (i) developing smart sensors for rapid and precise detection of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria at the manufacturing, retail, and consumer levels; (ii) reducing food waste and loss using AI-enabled, low-cost approaches; and (iii) leveraging AI, sensor technologies, and molecular biology to understand and mitigate antimicrobial resistance in food supply chains. Dr. Ma earned her Bachelor's degree in Food Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University and her MSc and PhD degrees in Food Science from the University of British Columbia. Before joining OSU, Dr. Ma worked as an Assistant Professor at Florida State University and Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of California, Davis. |

Shannen Kelly serves as the American Spice Trade Association’s (ASTA) Senior Manager of Regulatory and Scientific Affairs, where she guides members on complex regulatory and scientific issues affecting the spice industry. She works to execute ASTA’s regulatory and technical affairs strategy by monitoring regulatory developments and creating member resources on regulatory and technical affairs matters to assist compliance activities. Before joining ASTA, Shannen held several scientific roles supporting trade associations, including the International Organization of the Flavor Industry (IOFI), the International Association of Color Manufacturers (IACM), and the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA).
